Peace silk, also known as ahimsa silk, is produced without harming the silkworms.
In conventional silk production, silkworms are killed – typically by boiling them alive – to extract the silk threads from their cocoons. In contrast, peace silk allows the cocoons to hatch naturally, enabling the silkworms to complete their life cycle and transform into butterflies, as nature intended. The silk threads are then collected after the moths have emerged from the cocoons.

This method of peace silk production is rooted in the principle of ahimsa – a Sanskrit word meaning “non-violence”. Peace silk is a more ethical and humane alternative to traditional silk, as it avoids killing silkworms.

It is worth noting that peace silk production is more time-consuming and labor-intensive, which makes it a more expensive fabric. But isn’t it worth paying a little more, knowing you’ve helped save the lives of thousands of silkworms?  Lives matter – even the small ones.
